The bodies of several dozen soldiers murdered in cold blood have been found north of Baghdad. They were ambushed by militants who forced them to lie down on their front before shooting each victim in the back of the head. The attack near the restive city of Baquba is being seen as yet another attempt by insurgents to discourage Iraqis from joining security forces working with the Americans.

Meanwhile a mortar attack near the capital killed a US diplomat. Ed Seitz is said to be the first official of the American embassy to die in Iraq since last year’s invasion. He was killed in a strike on a US military headquarters near Baghdad airport.
