The Portuguese government has announced its soldiers in Iraq will be withdrawn on February 12, after an extended stay to help provide security for the elections on January 30. Lisbon has about 120 Portuguese national guards in Nassiriya, which is about 300 kilometres south of Baghdad.

The soldiers arrived in Iraq in November 2003 and were due to leave a year later.
