The European constitution is dead, according to Foreign Minister Bernard Bot of the Netherlands.

After talks with his Austrian counterpart Ursula Plassnik, representing the EU presidency for the first half of this year, Bot said that is the way it is in his country.

Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Scheussel last Monday said he would try to resuscitate the EU charter which was rejected by Dutch and French voters last year:

“The constitution is not dead. The constitution is in the middle of a ratification process.”

Saying there was no chance of another referendum on the matter, Bot was clear the EU would ‘have to concentrate on practical measures based on the Nice Treaty’.
