A suicide bomber killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens more near a sacred Shi’ite shrine in the southern Iraqi city of Najaf. Police say the bomber blew himself up when he was stopped at a checkpoint as he was heading to the Imam Ali shrine. Local reports claim there were two attacks, including the suicide blast. Najaf, which is sacred to Shi’ites from around the world has previously been hit by bombings, which U.S. and Iraqi officials say are designed to spark a sectarian civil war.
