Prodi to prove his coalition in Parliament

Italy’s Romano Prodi will today present his vision for future policy to the upper house of parliament. This ahead of a confidence vote among senators, expected tomorrow, to determine whether he stays on as Prime Minister. Prodi offered to resign last week after losing a key vote on foreign policy. Observers say his leftist coalition partners have now been brought into line by the threat that the opposition right could return to power.

Franco Turigliato, a communist senator who abstained in that vote, said: “I’m waiting to see the wider picture. I can imagine what Prodi’s speech will be but I’m waiting to see how the different political forces position themselves before making a decision.”
