Two suicide bombers have attacked a group of Shi’ite pilgrims in the town of Hilla, about one hundred kilometers south of Baghdad. An emergency medic said at least ninety people have been killed and at least one hundred and sixty wounded. A police source said the attackers stood within metres of each other amongst a crowd and detonated their explosive vests.

There were a number of attacks in Iraq on pilgrims heading for the religious festival of Arbaeen, in the shrine city of Karbala, on Friday. Dozens more have been killed in gunbattles and bombings. US and local forces fear reprisals could frustrate efforts to quell sectarian violence.
