The real solution to the problem of Iraq’s more than two million displaced people is for them to find the conditions to return home. That is the main conclusion of an international conference in Amman on how to ease the burden of host countries. Along with neighbours Jordan and Syria which host the bulk of its refugees, Iraq complained it had been abandoned by the West. A final statement called for extended resettlement opportunities in the West and financial assistance to Jordan and Syria. According to the UN refugee agency, the displacement sparked by the war in Iraq is the biggest in the region since the creation of Israel in 1948.
