Irish “No” vote prompts lively pub discussions

In an Irish bar opposite the European Commission in Brussels, there are no prizes for guessing the main talking point today.

But, as they followed events in the Emerald Isle on the big screen, punters found it hard to agree on the outcome of the vote.

“This is absolutely fantastic,” said one man.
“I mean, of the 27 member states, we have one member state which has actually given the choice to the people. The constitution of Ireland dictates this has to be the case, and it has been a very good turnout. This has solidly been a “No” vote.”

But ask another Irishman what he thinks and the answer is very different.

“They (the Irish) received billions of money to get the infrastructures of Ireland up to a good standard and they turn around to the European Commission and it is like giving the two fingers!” he said.
“Today is Friday the thirteenth. It is a black day for Ireland.”

So not all Irish eyes are smiling at a result that has got the whole of Europe talking.
