Syria outraged by attack on border crossing

Simply a farm, or a terrorist base? Syria has reacted furiously to a cross-border assault from Iraq last night in which Damascus says eight civilans died.

Eyewitnesses say four helicopters swept in at night, with two landing to drop off troops before leaving four minutes later.

The attack site is near Syria’s main crossing point to Iraq, and the Iraqi government in Baghdad says the operation targeted insurgents who were operating from within Syria.

Damascus is calling the attack a “monsterous crime contrary to international law”, adding it expects compensation from America and may lodge a protest with the UN Security Council.

Washington has yet to confirm or deny that an operation involving its forces took place. It has accused Syria in the past of providing a safe haven for Iraqi insurgents.
