Three out of ten Europeans smoke every day or once in a while, over the age of 15. Greece has the highest proportion of smokers than average, according to a Eurobarometer survey. It says 42% of Greeks smoke. Bulgaria places next, with 39%. Northern Europe is not exempt, with 37% of Latvians smoking.

The lowest rates were registered in Slovenia and Sweden, where a quarter or less laid claim to the habit. Almost half of all Europeans say they’ve never smoked. One fifth say they’ve quit. Less than a third say they find the warnings on cigarette packets effective, like the ones that say ‘smoking kills’.
