At least 16 people were killed and four more left seriously hurt, when a bus ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians in southern Bulgaria. First reports said the bus’s brakes had failed but the driver couldn’t pull over.

The accident happened near the town of Yambol. The country road was full of people heading to a local fair to celebrate Orthodox Ascension Day. The bus driver died, and two of the other victims were elderly passengers. They were among a group of pensioners who had been on a day trip in the mountains.

The government in Sofia plans to call a day of national mourning.
