Obama pressed to speak out on Iran election

With Iranian opposition supporters stepping up their campaign around the world US President Barack Obama is coming under pressure to take a tougher stance on Iran.

There have been demonstrations in several capital cities, including Washington. The protestors want Obama to condemn the election result. But some analysts say he needs a balanced approach. Rasool Nafisi, Professor of Sociology and Iran Studies at Strayer University said: “His assertions, the statements, are quite useful because if you go one way too far Iranians accuse you of interfering with their affairs. And also, the opposition may think we are coming to help them one way or another, that in reality, we are not.” Up to now Obama has voiced his concern about events in Iran, but has not criticised the Iranian leadership. Many of Republican rivals believe that should change. Former presidential rival Senator John McCain said: “I’m not for sending arms, I’m not for fomenting violence. Nothing, except to say that America’s position in the world is one of moral leadership. And that’s what America’s all about.” Iran has acccused the West of playing a role in stirring unrest on its streets.More about: Iran, USA
