As Michael Jackson was eulogised in an emotional public memorial in Los Angeles, his fans across the world joined in the mourning.

While thousands gathered to watch a screening of the memorial service in New York’s Times Square, others gravitated towards the neighbourhood of Harlem. “I grew up with Mike and the whole Jackson family and I consider him like a brother. Still to this day I can’t believe he has gone,” said one bystander. Five thousand fans gathered in a sports arena in Berlin to watch the service on large screens. Several hundred had signed a book of condolence, and many were in tears. “It’s good that this was organised so that people can express their compassion and their grief and I am happy that I managed to get here,” said one German Jackson fan. Fans in Italy’s fashion capital, Milan, stopped to watch the event on a maxi screen in the city’s central piazza: In Russia, fans sang along to a medley of Jackson’s hits as they released balloons into the air, while in Hong Kong, a Michael Jackson fan club held their own tribute, giving their own performances of some of their idol’s most popular hits. A wax figure of Jackson was also put on display.More about: , ,
