The US Senate Banking Committee has approved the nomination of Ben Bernanke for a second four-year term as head of the country’s central bank.

The vote – 16 for and seven against – reflected misgivings among some senators who have criticised the Federal Reserve’s actions both before and after the financial crisis.

The full Senate is however expected to vote to confirm Bernanke in the new year.
