The people of the Transylvanian town of Timisoara are today celebrating the 20th anniversary of demonstrations that started the 1989 Romanian Revolution. The unrest spread to the capital, Bucharest, and eventually lead to the execution of dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu.
After Communist rule was overthrown, the symbol was cut out of the Romanian flag. Hundreds of people who took part in the protests 20 years ago gathered to remember those who lost their lives.
A special service was held at the town’s Orthodox Cathedral, the same place were Romanian security forces opened fire on protesters back in 1989, killing over a hundred people, some of whom were there seeking refuge.
