German Greens celebrate 30th anniversary

Still putting the planet first, Germany’s Green Party has more than moved into mainstream politics as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

A photo opportunity to denounce the use of coal- fired power stations helped launched the environmentalists’ regional election campaign. They are hoping to return to power in North Rhine- Westphalia, with victory in May a fitting way to
celebrate three decades of existence.

“The Greens are now 30 years old or, I should say, 30 years young,” party leader Claudia Roth told reporters. “We have not finished yet at all and are still speaking out.”

When the party was in national government with the Social Democrats from 1998, Joschka Fischer was a high-profile foreign minister.

Now back in opposition, the Greens can take inspiration from the humble beginnings of an ‘anti- party party’ that made it all the way to the top.
