Hungry Haitians join the queue for bread in the Delmas district of Port-au-Prince.

Since the quake the strong, the armed and the criminal have been profiting from the chaos and breakdown of law and order.

However, at the Delmas bakery prices remain at pre-quake rates and each individual is allowed a maximum of five baguettes.

Violence is part of the daily tapestry of life in Port-au-Prince as desperate people fight over anything that might be of value.

In a bid to speed up aid and stem lawlessness, the UN has agreed to add an extra 2,000 troops and 1,500 police to its 9,000-strong peacekeeping force based in the country.
