Riots in Algiers over housing policy

A dispute over housing has triggered serious rioting in the capital of Algeria.

It is a recognised problem in Algiers. A year ago there were several days of disturbances, during which rioters threw petrol bombs at police.

This time they blocked roads and threw stones and bottles.

But the disturbances quickly subsided after a contingent of the riot squad moved in.

Municipal workers had begun to demolish three houses here in the densely-populated Algiers neighbourhood of Diar Elaffia.

Their residents were evicted.

The government has announced a multi-billion euro investment plan to improve living conditions and create jobs over the next four years.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has himself promised one million new housing units by 2014.
