FIFA is due to announce today who will host the 2018 and 2022 football world cups.

But the decision process has been dogged by controversy.

Two top officials were expelled after a votes-for-money sting by a British newspaper.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the BBC reported on allegations of bribery involving two top officials and a bankrupt marketing company. FIFA said the case is now closed and no officials had been found guilty of any offence.

Waiting for today’s announcement, the anticipation among journalists in Zurich is palpable.

But even at this late stage, ethics group Transparency International has called for the decision to be postponed pending an investigation.

For some, FIFA’s credibility is blown and the selection procedure itself has been tainted.
