Royal Wedding less lavish than previous bashes

Prince William and his bride-to-be Kate Middleton will be married by the spiritual head of the Anglican Church, Rowan Williams, the prince’s office has revealed.

In an attempt to make the wedding less extravagant as the rest of Britain bears the brunt of tough austerity measures, Kate Middleton will travel to Westminster Abbey by car instead of the traditional horse drawn carriage.

A point made by royal author Robert Jobson:

“There is no question that the palace is concerned about this being perceived as a lavish wedding. They want to try to play that down. The arrival in a car I think it is quite a good thing because it is seen as modern princess arriving.”

Still, those who line the route of the wedding- billed as one of the biggest TV events of the year- will get to see the couple in regal procession following the service.

William, son of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, announced his engagement to long-term girlfriend Kate last November.
