Medvedev tightens security after airport attack

In the wake of the Moscow airport bombing, special security measures on Russia’s transport system as a whole have been ordered by President Medvedev.

The president, who appeared visibly shaken on television shortly after the explosion, expressed his condolences to the families of the dead and injured. And he vowed that those behind the bombing would be tracked down and punished.

Medvedev called an emergency meeting and sent senior officials to the airport. He has delayed his trip to the annual World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, where he was due to deliver the opening speech.

There is growing speculation that militants from the north Caucasus are behind the attack. Medvedev has called the insurgency there the biggest threat to Russia’s security.
