Suez marches on in defiance of protest ban

Similar pro-democracy protests have also taken place in Suez, eastern Egypt.

It was the scene of clashes between protesters and the security forces on Friday, which left at least 12 people dead.

Demonstrators marched through Suez city on Saturday afternoon before a curfew got underway at 4 p.m. local time.

They chanted anti-government slogans and called on President Mubarak to resign.

Relatives of the local residents who lost their lives yesterday sat outside the city morgue, weeping for their loved ones.

On Friday, there were also clashes between police and protesters in the northern coastal city of Alexandria, where 20 people have died since Friday.

They say they are fed up of living in poverty under a non-democratic regime.

About 40 percent of Egypt’s 79 million people live on less than two dollars a day.
