Ouattara forces close in on incumbent Ivorian leader

The residence of the incumbent leader of Ivory Coast has been attacked by fighters loyal to presidential claimant Alassane Ouattara.

Laurent Gbagbo has ignored a fresh deadline to resign and remains holed up in his home in Abidjan under the protection of presidential guards.

The Prime Minister in Ouattara’s government, Guillaume Soro, said: “Gbagbo is finished. I’m not waiting for this ultimatum (deadline), we are organising and we think that things are over now and Gbagbo must resign.”

After taking control of numerous cities across the country, Ouattara supporters have also seizied control of state television.

Ouattara’s camp has announced a night time curfew in Abidjan, the commercial capital, until Sunday evening.

Gbagbo has refused to cede power since elections in November.

The UN certified that Ouattara was the winner and the international community has recognised him as the new president.
