The UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague has sentenced the former Croatian general, Ante Gotovina, to 24-years in jail for crimes against humanity.

The court found him guilty of conducting a campaign of murder and plunder to drive some hundreds of thousands of Serbs from Krajina as Croat forces recaptured the Serb-controlled region in 1995.

His co-defendant, police general Mladen Markac, was also jailed for 18 years. But another former army general, Ivan Cermak, who had been accused of the same crimes was acquitted.

Hailed as a hero by some in Croatia, Gotovina’s arrest in 2005 triggered protests in Zagreb where suppport for him still remains strong.
