A Kazakh man is being questioned by Italian police after he tried to hijack a plane by putting a blade to an air hostess’s throat.

Valeriy Tolmashov attacked the stewardess with a small knife on board an Alitalia flight from Paris to Rome on Sunday evening.

He then, according to witnesses, told the pilot to land in the Libyan capital of Tripoli before being overpowered by cabin crew and fellow passengers.

AFP reported that the 48-year-old works as an advisor to Kazakhstan’s delegation at UNESCO, the UN educational, scientific and cultural organisation, in Paris.

None of the 131 passengers were hurt. The flight attendant was treated for minor injuries on arrival in Rome.
