Queen Elizabeth visits scene of British massacre in Ireland

It was one of the most daring diplomatic engagements of her reign of nearly 60 years.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has visited Croke Park sports stadium in Dublin, the scene of a massacre by British troops and a key symbol of Irish nationalism. 14 civilians were shot dead there in 1920 during a Gaelic football match.

More than 90 years on, some in the country still believe the Queen’s presence there is unacceptable.

Over 20 people were arrested on Tuesday in protests at the first visit by a British monarch since Ireland won its independence from London in 1921.

Police have dealt with a number of security alerts and the army destroyed a makeshift bomb on a Dublin-bound bus on the eve of the Queen’s visit.
