Several wounded in Istanbul bomb blast

A bicycle bomb has wounded eight people in a residential and shopping district in Istanbul. It was at the end of the morning rush hour. No one immediately claimed responsibility.

The local police chief said an electric bicycle with the explosive device attached was left near a police technical college.

Turkey is due to vote in a parliamentary election on June 12. An MP with the ruling AK party said terrorist organisations carry out these attacks before every election. Groups which have done so in the past include Kurds, Islamists and the extreme left.
