Pre-election cyber attack in Turkey

Just days before Turkey’s general election, state websites have come under attack from the Internet vigilante group Anonymous.

It is part of a protest against what the group describes as government Internet censorship, and plans for a new web filtering system that prompted a protest march by tens of thousands last month.

Access to a number of addresses was blocked from 6pm local time last night. They included state telecoms sites and social security and weather sites.

Anonymous came to prominence last year with a series of high-profile attacks.

However it has denied any plans to interfere with Sunday’s vote in which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK party is expected to secure a clear victory for a third term.
