Hungarian war crimes suspect Sandor Kepiro was acquitted over World War II Nazi executions in Serbia on Monday.

A Budapest Municipal Court cleared the 97-year-old former police captain of all charges.

The trial concerned his alleged role in a deadly raid which led to the death of 1200 civilians and the execution of 30 people on the banks of Danube River in Novi Sad.

Kepiro proclaimed his innocence saying he was brought to court on trumped-up charges.

The non-binding ruling is likely to be appealed.
