Serena Williams used all her experience to book her place in the semi-final of the Toronto Cup beating the Czech player Lucie Safarova in three sets.
Safarova started brightly winning the first set, but Williams back from injury and illness in June, powered her opponent off the court for an impressive 4-6 6-3 6-2 win.
The former world number 1 will now face the Belarussian Victoria Azarenka, who moved into the last four with a straight sets victory over the Kazack qualifier Galina Voskoboeva 6-1 6-2
In the other semi Samatha Stosur will play the Pole Agnieszka Radwanska.
