“Faust” grabs Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival

Russian director Alexander Sokurov’s German language film “Faust” has won the Golden Lion at this years Venice Film Festival.

The film follows Faust and a deranged Mephistopheles as they play out their destinies.

Hollywood film critic Deborah Young said of the film:

“Taking highbrow to the edge of slapstick, Sokurov’s idiosyncratic adaptation of Faust will intrigue some and turn off others.”

Irish star Michael Fassbender picked up the prize for best actor for his role in “Shame”. He plays a sex addict whose life spirals out of control when his younger sister moves into his New York apartment.

The jury award went to the Italian immigration film “Terraferma”. The film follows a fisherman and his family as they discover a pregnant Ethiopian woman off the Sicilian coast.

The Silver Lion for best director was awarded to China’s Shangjun Cai for his “People Mountain People Sea”, best actress went to Hong Kong’s Deanie Ip who starred as Sister Peach in the film “A Simple Life”.
