Cobo paints Madrid red with Vuelta triumph

Juan Jose Cobo stood proudly on top of the podium on Sunday after winning the Tour of Spain for his biggest stage race triumph of his career.

The only thing missing on the final 95.5 kilometre trek into Madrid was the champagne for the 30-year-old, who faced no real threat of losing his 13-second advantage over Britain’s Chris Froome.

The peloton were together at the end of largely ceremonial ride to the Spanish capital and a mass sprint to the finish line entertained the thousands that crammed the streets to see the action.

Peter Sagan, 21, sprung from nowhere to upset favourites Danieli Bennati and Alessandro Petacchi as the Slovakian celebrated his third stage win this edition. But the day and the race belonged to Cobo.

Second behind Cobo overall was Britain’s Chris Froome of Team Sky while Froome’s team-mate Bradley Wiggins rounded off the podium in third place.
