Kabul rocks to live music for the first time in 30 years

For the first time in three decades the sound of live music has resounded across the Afghanistan capital, Kabul.

Bands from Australia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan served up a six hour feast of of blues, indie electronica and death metal which had been banned under the austere Taliban regime.

Some concert goers had never seen a concert like this in the deeply conservative Muslim country.

“I have not watched a concert for a long time because there is fighting in Kandahar where I live and the Taliban are there so I came to Kabul to watch this concert,” explained Ahmad Shah who was in the audience.

The date and venue had to kept a closely guarded secret until the last moment to prevent the chance of an insurgent attack while twice in the afternoon the microphones were turned off to allow the call to prayer to sound out uninterrupted from nearby mosques.
