Shooting claims at Syrian opposition funeral

Syrian activists say mourners at the funeral of a murdered opposition leader came under fire in Qamishli in the north east of the country.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in the UK, said 50,000 people had turned out to bury Mashaal al-Tammo, a charismatic Kurdish opposition leader who was a critic of President Assad and his Kurdish rivals.

It is reported four gunmen burst into the 53-year- old’s house, killing him and wounding his son. It is not clear who carried out the assassination. The United States has condemned the killing.

Activists claimed one mourner was killed and three others injured at the funeral, although they have not been able to say who had opened fire.

There was unrest reported elsewhere across Syria too. The United Nations has calculated at least 2,900 people have been killed in the six month popular uprising against Assad’s rule.
