UK royal succession rules get the chop

Just six months after William and Kate tied the knot, a big shakeup of royal succession rules in the UK has been announced.

The 16 countries that have Queen Elizabeth as their monarch have agreed to end centuries of discrimination.

The Commonwealth leaders have decided to stop sons having precedence as heir to the throne.

And that is not all.

British Prime Minister David cameron announced:

“We’ve agreed to scrap the rule which says that no one who marries a Roman Catholic can become monarch. Let me be clear, the monarch must be in communion with the Church of England because he or she is the head of that church, but it is simply wrong they should be denied the chance to marry a Catholic, if they wish to do so.”

The agreement to change the rules came at a Commonwealth summit presided over by the Queen in Perth in Australia.

When her long monarchy comes to an end, the whole question of succession will come back into the spotlight; David Cameron made it clear he wanted the issue sorted out sooner and not later.
