Political sources say Italy’s interim prime minister Mario Monti is now likely to name his cabinet on Wednesday.

Business leaders, who have met with Monti, said he was “at the finish line” in the formation of his emergency government.

Following the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi, the idea is for the new administration to rule until at least the arrival of elections in 2013.

Monti, an experienced economist, faces a huge challenge in trying to turn around Italy’s dire financial problems – with the eyes of Europe and the rest of the world watching closely.
