Philippines storm kills hundreds

More than 400 people have been killed by a tropical storm in the Philippines, the Philippine National Red Cross said on Saturday.

The storm struck Mindanao island on Friday night, battering the cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.

Hundreds more are still missing and authorities warn that the death toll could rise further.

The storm triggered flash floods and landslides that swept away houses while many islanders were sleeping in their beds.

“At about 10pm last night, when the water levels were still low, I heard a cry for help and there was suddenly a very strong rush of water,” said one local man.

Large areas have been left without power and some domestic flights were cancelled as winds mustered speeds of up to 90 kilometres an hour.

The military has deployed at least 20,000 soldiers to assist with the rescue efforts and help the estimated 100,000 people who have been forced to flee their homes.
