Obama faces political fallout from Iraq withdrawal

The war may be over for US troops returning home from Iraq but Barack Obama’s political battle may be far from finished.

The president has sought a series of appearances at the joyous reunions between service personnel and their families; the successful US military withdrawal has been popular.

US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey addressed the troops, telling them: “This is a time to reflect on a generational journey, a journey of over 20 years that took us through two wars with Iraq to a new beginning in our relationship with Iraq.”

But Obama’s Republican opponents argue that only hours after bringing the troops home, sectarian tension has already flared at the highest level, undermining the chances of stability. Obama’s policy on Iraq is likely to feature prominently in his fight to retain the presidency.
