Dozens dead in Baghdad blasts

A series of explosions has rocked the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Around 60 people are dead and more than 180 are reported injured.

Apparently coordinated attacks in up to 18 separate locations have brought carnage, four days after the last US soldiers left Iraqi soil.

Surrounded by debris, one woman in western Baghdad, who identified herself as Um Hanin, said: “The baby was sleeping. Shards of glass fell on our heads. Her father carried her out. She is now scared in the next room. Why don’t we have security and stability in this country?”

Mainly Shi’ite areas were targeted in the explosions during the morning rush-hour.

Sectarian tension has risen in recent days, with Iraq’s Shi’ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki seeking the arrest of the country’s Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi on terror charges that he denies.
