The government of Guinea-Bissau has confirmed its troops have foiled a new coup attempt from within the military.

Reports say, during the attack, Prime minister Carlos Gomes Junior took refuge at a foreign embassy.

The head of the country’s navy has been detained, accused of being the coup’s ringleader.

The former Portuguese colony has struggled with successive coups and military mutinies since independence in the 1970s.
