2012 marked the tenth anniversary of the euro. Despite that, there did not seem much to celebrate at an EU level as the New Year was seen in.

Denmark, which took over the EU’s rotating presidency, has insisted it will do everything in its power to tackle the eurozone’s debt crisis.

But, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel warned of the difficult year ahead, particularly for the eurozone, in her New Year greetings. She tried to allay fears of meltdown by saying there were still reasons for economic cheer but even Greek officials now admit keeping Greece in the euro will be tough.

Outside the eurozone, Hungary’s new constitution was causing a political storm with critics describing the changes as undemocratic.
