Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, on a tour of the Gulf states has intervened in a row stirred up by Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party at home.
It asked questions in parliament inferring she had “legitimised the oppression of women” when wearing a headscarf to mosques in Abu Dhabi on Sunday and again on Thursday in Oman.
The Queen called the claims “real nonsense”, an unprecedented frankness when discussing a domestic political party.
