Gilani contempt trial opens in Islamabad

Pakistan’s legal system has fired its latest shot in the triangular struggle for power there between the courts, the army and government.

The Supreme Court has begun contempt proceedings against the prime minister for failing to follow its instructions to reopen a corruption case against President Zardari.

But Yousuf Raza Gilani’s lawyer says the constitution backs the prime minister. “We bow our heads to the court’s decision. I will try to satisfy it about section 248’s presidential immunity. God willing, I will try to convince them that on this issue presidential immunity is complete,” said Aitezaz Ahsan.

The Supreme Court could eventually push Gilani from office, but the real target is the president. Judges and lawyers have been set against Zardawi since he opposed the court’s chief justice in 2007.
