Kirchner slams Cameron comments as ‘nonsense’

Argentinian President Cristina Kirchner has wasted no time bouncing back from surgery on a suspected tumour in her throat to resume the diplomatic offensive against Britain over the Falkland Islands.

She dismissed comments from the British Prime Minister David Cameron last week as “nonsense”, and insisted Argentina was not the “bad, violent” protagonist in the affair.

“I heard they were calling us, the Argentines, colonialists. The UN still has 16 cases of places that are colonised, and of these 10 are from England and obviously one of the most emblematic are our Malvinas Islands,” she said.

Cameron’s “colonialist” poke sparked anti-British demonstrations in Buenos Aires on Friday, with flag-burning and demands that Argentina cut diplomatic ties.

Some 3,000 people live on the Falklands, the only long-term settlement in the islands’ history, and London insists they will have the final say on which country they want to belong to.

The two countries fought a short but bloody war in 1982 over the islands after Argentina attempted an invasion.
