Questions multiply after Aleppo bombings

Friday’s bomb blasts in Aleppo, Syria’s relatively middle-class commercial hub, which killed at least 28 people, have raised a storm of speculation.

The bombs targetted military and security service buildings, yet no-one has claimed responsibility for them. The Syrian opposition says it may be the government trying to discredit them, while others say it was elements of the opposition punishing Aleppo for not rising up in revolt or supporting them.

Today has seen an intensification of the bombardment of Homs, where Syrian troops have been seen massing for a ground offensive.

Evidence the conflict may spill over Syria’s frontiers came from Tripoli in Lebanon yesterday, when fighting broke out after a demonstration against Syria’s President Assad. Sunni muslims, who mostly support the Syrian uprising, fired from their district of Bab al-Tabbaneh into the pro-Assad Alawite minority district of Jebel Mohsen.

The are often clashes between the rival communities. One person was killed, and six were wounded, including three soldiers from the Lebanese army.
