More than 11,000 people lost their lives during the notorious siege of Sarajevo, which began 20 years ago.

A museum in the Bosnian capital has the only existing exhibition about the nearly four-year long attack, which reduced the inhabitants of a European capital city to a state of medieval deprivation, in constant fear of death.

Elma Hasimbegovic, the curator of the museum, was a teenager during the siege.

She said: “It shows the struggle, the courage they had, it shows the mentality, the spiritual courage they showed by organising different cultural events, organising schools and pretending life was normal though it was not. It was everything but normal.”
