Kidnapped Italian workers ‘freed by Syrian forces’ An Italian tourist guide has been freed by Maoist rebels in India after almost a month in captivity.
It was believed to be the first time they had kidnapped a foreigner.
Paolo Bosusco and another Italian were seized on March 14 in a remote part of the eastern state of Orissa during a tourist visit to indigenous tribes.
A mediator travelled to the remote camp to secure his release. The guide said afterwards that he was fine and glad everything was over.
The other Italian, Claudio Colengero, was freed after 11 days. He denied the rebels’ accusations that the pair had been abducted because they were taking photos of tribeswomen bathing in a river.
The Maoist rebels have been in conflict with the state for decades in much of central and eastern India. They claim to fight for the rights of millions of landless people, amid tensions with industrial developers over resources.
