Sarkozy ridicules rival for refusing to join him in debates

Nicolas Sarkozy is fighting for his political life and he has upped his campaign to win a second presidential term. His target – Socialist rival Francois Hollande, who has refused to accept his challenge and take part in more than one debate before the May 6 run-off.

“My observation is that it’s hard to have a debate on your own. So if he is too busy, I propose that we change the date. If he prefers the morning or the afternoon, no problem. If he prefers the evening, no problem. If Thursday’s better than Wednesday, no problem. If he wants to go on for an hour instead of an hour and a half, because one hour and a half is a bit too tiring, no problem. But he cannot run away from the debate. Because the French will demand a debate. They have to know the truth of my projects and his own… that’s what it means to respect the people of France.”
