Nobel laureate creates new political party in Egypt

Protesting Egyptians gathered outside the Ministry of Defence in Cairo on Saturday, continuing a demonstration that began the night before.

The crowd called for the ruling generals to step down, and the electoral commission to be dissolved for disqualifying two Islamist candidates from the presidential elections.

Nobel peace prize winner Mohamed Elbaradei, who played an important part in the uprising last year, has formed a new political party.

Speaking at a press conference in Cairo where he made the announcement, Elbaradei said: “The time has come to start a comprehensive political process to achieve the goals of the revolution, the goals of the revolution that we the people of Egypt and its majority had started to achieve – to live freely in our country, independently and with dignity.”

Elbaradei is the former head of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a political liberal who called on former president Hosni Mubarak to make reforms.

Although Elbaradei pulled out of the presidential race in January, his party aims to offer an alternative to the Islamist ones that have been dominant since the uprising.
