Greek voters hear final party appeals

The Greek general election campaign is over, the competing parties held their final rallies on Friday night.

The polls say his PASOK Socialists will be beaten into second place, but leader Evangelos Venizelos says he is ready to resume a role in a coalition with the Conservatives of New Democracy in order to push through the EU-imposed reforms and debt cuts.

A coalition is the likeliest outcome, even though New Democracy’s Antonis Samaras has vowed he will not form another coalition with the Socialists. But with polls suggesting 45% of the electorate now supports parties that reject austerity, from the extreme right to left, some deal around the mainstream centre is the probable outcome.

The X-factor is the number of undecided voters, currently standing at 25%, which makes opinion polls less reliable.
